Years ago, I noticed that a number of friends and acquaintances around me were suddenly walking around in red vests.
It turned out that this had to do with something called “KingsMen,” an organization that organizes trips to the mountains from which men return fitter. Now, I’ll honestly admit that I was somewhat skeptical and found it just a bit strange, those “red ones”. A few years later, I was at a vacation conference and KingsMen organized an afternoon workshop. Because I was curious about what it actually entailed, I signed up. During that workshop, I noticed that we very quickly got to the core of a number of things in my own life and that of the men around me. Fascinated, I decided to sign up for a Quest trek.
Now, so many years later, looking back, I see how much I have been able to learn on each of the treks, both as a participant and while leading a Quest. I see how God works through His Holy Spirit in KingsMen to change lives for the better, and also the responsibility we ourselves have in that. Something I still get to learn time and again is to show initiative and leadership in my family, not to just let things happen, but to live consciously. I have learned that I cannot do this alone but need friends, for difficult moments but also to celebrate. We meet locally every two weeks in a so-called Triple Fit group where I have made new friends and we challenge each other, physically in bootcamp sessions, but also trying to keep each other sharp intellectually and mentally. I am very grateful for this!
